When Plumbing Makes Sounds: A Complete Guide to Identifying and Fixing Noisy Pipes

The Plumbing System’s Vocabulary

A plumbing system that’s working correctly is nearly silent during normal operation — the sound of water flowing through pipes is usually below the threshold of easy audibility from the rooms above or adjacent to the pipe runs. When plumbing becomes audible as a household sound, it’s communicating about a condition that wasn’t there before or that has worsened to the point of being noticeable. Different sounds indicate different conditions, and the distinction between them narrows the diagnostic field significantly.

The sounds of plumbing problems are specific enough to be diagnostic when understood: water hammer has a characteristic bang or thud that’s covered in detail in Vol. 17 of this series. This article addresses the sounds that water hammer doesn’t explain — the whistling, rattling, humming, and dripping that indicate different conditions requiring different responses.

Whistling and Squealing: The High-Pitched Pressure Sounds

A whistling or squealing sound from pipes occurs when water is forced through a restriction — a partially closed valve, a faulty washing machine inlet valve, a worn washer in a faucet valve, or a pressure regulator that’s beginning to fail. The restriction creates the same conditions as a finger partially covering the end of a hose: the constricted flow produces a high-frequency vibration that transmits through the pipe as an audible whistle.

The diagnostic approach: identify which fixture or system is being used when the whistle occurs. If it happens only when a specific faucet is opened, that faucet’s valve washer or cartridge may be worn and needs replacement. If it happens when the toilet fills, the fill valve is the suspect. If it happens at any fixture, the pressure regulator (PRV) may be failing — a PRV that’s beginning to vibrate under flow creates a whole-house whistle that can be confirmed by checking supply pressure at an outdoor hose bib.

Rattling: The Loose Support Problem

Pipes that rattle when water flows through them are unsecured — they’re not firmly supported against the framing that surrounds them, and water’s flow-induced vibration causes them to move and contact adjacent surfaces. This is common in older homes where pipe straps have loosened over decades, in basement and crawl space runs where pipes are supported only at long intervals, and in walls where a plumbing update moved pipes without adding appropriate support at the new run length.

The fix for rattling pipes in accessible locations (basement, crawl space) is straightforward: add pipe straps (plastic or metal brackets that secure the pipe to adjacent framing) at 4–6 foot intervals along horizontal runs and at every floor level along vertical runs. The rattling stops when the pipe is secured against movement. For rattling in walls (where the pipe is inaccessible without opening drywall), the pipe strap fix requires accessing the pipe — sometimes possible through an existing access panel or by opening a small section of wall at the rattle location.

Humming: The System Pressure Sound

A low hum from pipes during water use indicates high water pressure creating flow-induced vibration throughout the supply system. Unlike whistling (which is localized to a restriction point), humming permeates the whole system because high pressure affects all pipes simultaneously. The supply pressure should be measured at an outdoor hose bib during the humming condition — if above 80 PSI, pressure reduction through PRV adjustment or installation is the solution.

Humming can also indicate that the water heater’s temperature/pressure relief valve (T&P valve) is beginning to weep or vibrate — a condition that indicates either excessive pressure or excessive temperature in the water heater. A T&P valve that drips or hums should be evaluated promptly; it’s a safety device and its partial opening indicates that the conditions it protects against are present.

Dripping Sounds Without Visible Leaks

A dripping sound within walls without any visible moisture often indicates a slow leak at a joint or connection that’s draining to a point where it’s wetting a surface internally without (yet) producing visible external evidence. This is the sound that requires prompt investigation — slow internal leaks that are already audible have been running long enough to begin saturating framing materials, and the damage accumulates with every additional day they continue.

Locating the internal leak source from the sound: listen at multiple positions along the wall and ceiling to identify the area of highest sound intensity. The highest intensity point is closest to the leak source. A thermal imaging camera (rentable from some tool rental companies) can visualize temperature differences caused by evaporating water from a leak — a non-invasive diagnostic before wall opening. If localization suggests a specific junction or fitting location, a small inspection hole (2×2 inch drywall cut) at that location reveals whether the leak is present and avoids unnecessary wall opening.
